With November right around the corner, political campaigns are heating up. A group of abortion-rights supporters including Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains rallied earlier this week at the state Capital. An abortion question on Colorado ballots this fall is kicking advocates on both sides into campaign mode.
“Amendment 62 would make abortion unconstitutional in the state of Colorado. The fundamental goal of this amendment is to restore the dignity of every human being. One way that dignity is robbed is by tearing that child apart in the womb,” co-founder of Personhood and Amendment 62 campaign manager Keith Mason said.
This is the second time a Colorado Fetal Personhood Amendment will appear on the ballot. Just a few months ago, supports collected close to 10,000 signatures to once again have voters choose on choice.
“The amendment states, ‘The term “person” shall apply to every human being from the beginning of the biological development of that human being,’” Mason said.
As incoming president of the Colorado Medical Society, Dr. Michael Pramenko said the whole organization opposes the amendment. He said it could hurt physician-patient relationships. “It can possibly interfere with the use of very typical medications that women use for birth control such as birth control pills as IUD. That potentially could be outlawed if this amendment is passed,” Dr. Pramenko said.
Both sides said it’s an issue that might never be resolved.
“We’ve seen in the past, if you do make it illegal, there is an underground increase in the number of illegal and dangerous means of achieving an abortion,” Dr. Pramenko said.
Personhood Colorado organizers said they are going to churches throughout the state to spread their message. On the other side, so far 48 organizations have signed resolutions vowing to fight Amendment 62.

When this is soundly defeated again, maybe its supporters will realize that they don’t have the right to force their views on others.
I doubt it, but maybe.
