Grand Junction, Colo.
If you’ve been constantly sneezing and are fed up with your seasonal allergies, you’re not alone.
Mesa County Health Officials say this year’s pollen season has been far worse than other years. Right now Sagebrush is the dominant pollen across the Grand Valley.
Sneezing, stuffed nose, blood-shot eyes, “If you have contacts you cannot wear contacts,” Sue Baroffio said.
Baroffio has been battling allergies for over 30 years and says this year is far more severe.
“Well it’s been worse, you’re nose feels like you constantly have a cold and you can’t swallow,” Baroffio said.
In a recent Mesa County Air Sample survey, Pollen levels for weeds currently rank in the high category.
“These pollens pick up and blow thirty to forty miles and we get plenty of winds here,” Dr. William Scott said.
Scott says an increase in rain levels is to blame, making weed plants double in size. “Weeds grow big and tall and then throw out more pollen.”
The rain water also made Sagebrush grow strong across the Grand Valley.
“Sagebrush is a tough plant. It takes some twenty degree weather to knock the pollen out of that,” Scott said.
Dr. Scott recommends taking Zirtek to combat these allergies.
“The generic for Zirtek is my favorite. Take it to prevent not just when you’re miserable, take it regularly.”
But he says the end is in sight for allergy relief. “The first of October I would expect less Sagebrush and by Halloween we’re hopefully done with the pollens.”
In addition to pharmacy drugs, if you’ve been struggling with allergies your primary care physician may recommend Immunotherapy or allergy shots to help build up your immune system.
