Grand Junction, Colo.
Some multi-million dollar renovations to Suplizio Field and Stocker Stadium will soon be a reality.
The Grand Junction City Council voted Monday night, and approved funding for the $8 million project. The city says all of the funds will come from grants, donations, and state lottery proceeds, not taxpayer money. The renovations would include a new press box, new seating in both the baseball and football stadiums, better access for the handicapped, and new concessions. The capacity of Suplizio Field would also increase by over 100 people.
The project would start the day after the Junior College World Series wraps up next May, and take a year to complete. However, the city says events will still go on throughout the renovations.
“This complex is used by a whole variety of classes and schools…Mesa State College of course. The four local high schools, and all of the other special events that go on in the valley,” said Rob Schoeber, the director of parks and recreation for the city of Grand Junction. “And we will do everything we can to keep those events on track at the high quality level people are used to seeing here.”
While the city agrees the renovations are long overdue, the project was given a sense of urgency earlier this year when JUCO officials said renovations were needed to keep the World Series in Grand Junction. If the renovations are completed, it’s expected to lead to a 25-year extension to keep the World Series in town.
