The Grand Junction City Council has decided to move forward with the ban against medical marijuana centers within the city limits. The Council expects to see the new ordinance in the next couple weeks, while the big decision to ban medical marijuana centers has already been made. In these two weeks, there is still a lot left to be decided.

Councilman Gregg Palmer calls the ban a time out. “We’ve decided that Grand Junction isn’t ready for medical marijuana.”

Jake Sheridan, owner of Blue Mesa, calls the decision pointless. “You put in all this work and then you jump through all their hoops, you do everything they ask you to do, and then they still just take it away from you because they can.”

Sheridan admits opening up his medical marijuana shop was a risky choice. His business has been open for only four months. Sheridan is now waiting to hear when they’ll close down.

“We will set a date for when they will have to cease operations within the city limits of Grand Junction,” says Palmer.

The shutdown date is just one of the questions still in the works: “What happens to the state licensing money, will those be refunded? We understand there will be some lease issues and those types of things,” explains Palmer.

Sheridan just paid more than $8,000 in the past two weeks. His shop, and nearly 30 across the city, will be forced to shut down. “I feel like I’ve worked very hard to make this work. We take good care of our patients, and I just don’t think its right to have it taken away.”

Palmer says the break from the business is to get a better handle on the industry. “We’re not ready for it in our community. The industry isn’t ready, the legislation isn’t ready, so we’re not going to allow it for the time being.”

The final decision to ban isn’t one that Sheridan is ready to settle for. “We’ve call our lawyer and we’re checking into it, and that’s all we can do at the moment.”

Under state law, people can still get access to marijuana for medical use.

A caregiver is defined as having up to five patients, no more than six plants per patient, and allowed to distribute two ounces to each of their patients.

So the shops merely move out of the city…..And then the county, steps in, followed by the big guns, the Feds.  Didn’t this all start originally with the voters? I’m certainly not for pot shops on every corner.  Excuse my ignorance, but HOW did it all originate???
