St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction is joining blood centers across the country in honoring their Blood Collection Professionals this week.

About 30 million units of blood components are transfused annually in the United States.

Locally on the Western Slope 5,000 units are needed every year.

Blood transfusions are crucial in the treatment of people with serious medical conditions like accident and trauma victims, cancer patients and organ transplants.

St. Mary’s officials say blood collectors play at critical role in helping to ensure blood is available to patients in need.

“There’s always a need for blood.  It only lasts 42 days so there’s a constant need to replenish it.  We have some great staff here with over 50 years of experience at St. Mary’s, so they’re pretty good at what they do,” St. Mary’s Blood Center Donor Recruiter, Jill Breman said.

Community members are encouraged to show their support this week by making a donation and helping blood collectors meet our local blood supply needs.

To schedule a donation appointment you can call 907-298-2555.
