Mesa County, Colo.
Before approving a $500,000 tax cut for local businesses Monday, Mesa County commissioners found out the county is losing over $27,000 in unpaid taxes.
The Mesa County Treasurer told commissioners that despite their best efforts, they’ve been unable to track down unpaid property taxes, covering a six year span starting in 2003. The treasurer, Monika Todd, says while they won’t be getting the tax revenue, it’s not because the county is letting people off the hook.
“Businesses have disappeared overnight. Some are in bankruptcy, and we know we can no longer collect anymore,” Todd explained. “We worked very closely with the assessor’s office on our diligent research” to find the unpaid taxes, Todd told News Channel 5.
Todd says Monday’s cancellation of property taxes is a fairly routine process that is done every couple of years.
